Women and Islam
"He
(God) it is who did create you from a single soul and therefrom did
create his mate, that he might dwell with her (in love)..." (Qur'an
7:189)
"And
of His signs is: that He created for you from yourselves mates that
you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you
affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give
thought. (Qur'an, 30:21)

The position of women in society has often been the subject of much debate. Islam’s position regarding this has usually been presented to the Western reader with little objectivity. This paper is intended to provide a brief and accurate explanation of the Islamic stance, drawing upon the authentic sources of the Qur’an (God’s final revelation) and Hadeeth (sayings, actions and approvals of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Gender Equity
"Unto
men (of the family) belongs a share of that which Parents and near
kindred leave, and unto women a share of that which parents and near
kindred leave, whether it be a little or much - a determinate
share." (Qur'an 4:7)
"And
in no wise covet those things in which Allah hath bestowed His gifts
more freely on some of you than on others: to men is allotted what
they earn, and to women what they earn: but ask Allah of His bounty:
for Allah hath full knowledge of all things." (Qur'an 4:32)
"In accordance
with justice the rights of the wives (with regard to their husbands)
are equal to the (husband's) rights with regard to them." (Qur'an
2:228)
"And their
Lord responded to them (saying): Never will I allow to be lost the
work of (any) worker among you, whether male or female; you are of
one another..." (Qur'an, 3:195)

Gender Equity in Islam presents an overview of the status and rights of Muslim women as defined by the Qur'an and Sunnah (the traditions of the Prophet (pbuh)). In this brief but important work, Dr. Jamal Badawi examines the spiritual, social, economic, and political aspects of women's position in Islam and, in doing so, effectively summarizes the role of women in Muslim society. Further, in explaining the sources that provide the foundations for Islam's stance on gender equity, the author discusses the role of Islamic scholars in their approach to women's issues.
Following are some
rights, which Muslim women have! EXEMPTIONS GIVEN TO WOMEN IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. Women are exempt from: a.. Fasting when they are pregnant or nursing or menstruating, b.. Praying when menstruating or bleeding after childbirth, c.. The obligation to attend congregational prayers in the mosque on Fridays. d.. They are not obliged to take part as soldiers in the defense of Islam, although they are not forbidden to do so. But under normal circumstances they are allowed to do all the things that men do. - Even when they are menstruating, on special days, like the two Eid festivals, they are still allowed to come to the Eid prayers, and menstruating women can take part in most of the actions of the Hajj pilgrimage. Islamic laws does not requires that women should confine themselves to household duties. Muslim women have [and are as well] headed Islamic provinces [and states as well], like Arwa bint Ahmad, who served as governor of Yemen under the Fatimid Khalifahs in the late fifth and early sixth century. Name any other religion, political theory, or philosophy which offers such a comprehensiveness to women by giving her total control of her life and affairs? |

"And (as
for) the believing men and the believing women, they are guardians
of each other; they enjoin good and forbid evil and keep up prayer
and pay the poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Apostle; (as for)
these, Allah will show mercy to them; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise."
(Qur'an 9.71)
"If you
fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans,
marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if you fear
that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only
one... to prevent you from doing injustice." (Qur'an 4:3)
"And We
have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail (pains
of childbirth) upon travail his mother bore him, and in two years
was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to
your parents: to Me is (your final) Goal." (Qur'an 31:14)
A man came
to the Prophet Muhammad and said, “O Messenger of God! Who among the
people is the most worthy of my good companionship?” The Prophet
said: {Your mother.} The man said, “Then who?” The Prophet said:
{Then your mother.} The man further asked, “Then who?” The Prophet
said: {Then your mother.} The man asked again, “Then who?” The
Prophet said: {Then your father.}
"He who is involved in bringing up daughters, and accords benevolent treatment towards them, they will be protection for him against Hell-Fire." "Heaven is at the feet of the mothers." "Do not forbid the mosques of Allah to the women of Allah." "I enjoin you to be good to your women." Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) |
"Islam in its
original state gave women privileges and imposed no harsh restrictions
or double standards upon them.," says Saimah Ashraf, a 1997-98 winner

Does Islam Oppress Women? By Wasim Ukra, Sussex Uni |
Polygamy in Islam by Dr. Zakir Naik |

| Oppression of women exists in many cultures around the world. It would be unjust to blame these cultural practices on religious beliefs unless the teachings of the religion call to such behaviour. The teachings of Islam do not. | |||

"Say to the
believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their
modesty......And say to the believing women that they should lower
their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display
their beauty and ornaments except what ordinarily appear thereof;
that they should draw their veils over their bosoms...." (Qur'an 24:30,31)
"O Prophet,
tell your wives and daughters and the believing women that they
should cast their outer garments over their bodies (when abroad) so
that they should be known and not molested" (Qur'an 33:59)

According to
"The Almanac Book of Facts", the population increased 137% within the
past decade, Christianity increased 46%, while Islam increased 235%.
In a recent poll in the US, 100,000 people per year in America alone, are converting to Islam. For every 1 male convert to Islam, 4 females convert to Islam, why? The same ratio applies in the UK Find out here: http://www.islamfortoday.com/women.htm
Muslim women have been given their rights in every aspect of the religion with clear definitions of their role in society - as had men - with no injustice against either of them. As Allah
says: Whoever does deeds of righteousness, be they male or female, and
have faith, they will enter paradise and not the least injustice will be
done to them (Qur'an Nisaa (Women) 4:124) |
